St. David’s South Austin Medical Center Austin, TX
Bed Expansion and Facility Addition & Renovation
This project entailed the new construction of three nursing floors on top of the existing four story hospital to accommodate medical/surgical and universal care beds. It also included the renovation and expansion of such vital hospital departments as surgery, PACU, nursery, continuing care nursery, food service, nuclear medicine, and education.
The project was intrusive to many areas of the hospital, as renovations took place on all floors and new construction occurred adjacent to and over critical areas of the hospital. Significant phasing was required to maintain hospital operations without disruption. Existing stairs and elevators were extended vertically to serve the new floors and the building infrastructure was upgraded to comply with high rise codes.
A major design challenge was to tie the new and existing areas of the facility into one cohesive look. Rather than abandon the building's existing design concept, GTG chose to build upon it by incorporating design elements, such as wood accent panels, listello tiles, crown molding, and specialty lighting, to create a signature look for the facility. The result is a transitional design that blends new with old, has a welcoming appeal, and reflects Austin's eclectic culture.
