The Nashville Farmers’ Market Earns an AIA Middle Tennessee Design Award
Nashville, TN- GTG is excited to announce the Nashville Farmers’ Market has won the Citation Award at this year’s AIA Middle Tennessee Design Awards. The new Nashville Farmers’ Market grand entrance provides the community with an inviting space that celebrates the prominent history of the market. The design, incorporates public art, new signage, and an active-learning wall. The active learning wall was inspired by the Market’s concept of “Growing Together” and features vegetables grown in Tennessee, the state “Tristar” emblem, native flowers, and word searches in both English and Spanish. The wall is illuminated at night, serving as a focal point in an inviting plaza. GTG’s design also accounted for the Farmers’ Market Board’s goal of having the Market reach zero-waste by December 2020.
This year there were 60 submissions and 11 total winners, three Honor Awards, three Merit Awards, and five Citation Awards. Comments from the juror panel were released with the announcement, “The jury appreciated the skillful integration of environmental graphics and public artwork into the market design. Jurors had questions about the impact of previous site flooding into the planning and design of the renovation but appreciated the forward-thinking, zero-waste management strategy for the market. The jury also appreciated how the design opened up views to the market’s iconic open – web trusses, and how it skillfully concealed mechanical equipment through screening. This renovation should allow the Nashville Farmers Market to be a hub for retail activity within the city for years to come.”
Congratulations to all those who contributed to this project!
