Park Avenue Elementary Enhanced Option School
MNPS  |  Nashville, Tennessee

Project Facts

Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Size: 103,000 SF
Market: Education
Completed: 2000
Services: Architecture, Interiors
Scope: New Elementary School

Recognised for Education Design Excellence in the American School and University magazine in 2000, the ‘Enhanced School Design’ concept embraced a low teacher/student ratio, several specific and changing programs, and shared use with the local community, including a police precinct. The new 103,000-square-foot facility is situated on one city block with a sloped grade at the site of the old school.

The open, two-story common area is configured to zone student and community services, which at times have different occupancy schedules. The school contains Art and Music Facilities, a Police Precinct, English-as-a-Second Language Development Classrooms, Shared Community Spaces, Dining, Gymnasium, Media Center, and a Health Clinic.

The challenge of separating the school entrance with parent and bus dropoff from the entrance for community services was addressed by positioning the respective entrance on opposite sides of the building. The school entrance faces Park Avenue, and the community-services center entrance faces Elkins Avenue.

Gould Turner Group is honored to provide this project for Park Avenue Elementary; who has been actively involved in the West Nashville community for more than 50 years.
